Gibsons - Dining at Tenby 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Tenby harbour from a restaurant terrace, some time in the early 1970s, with the entire table looking anywhere except at each other. Painted by Fiona Osbaldstone, and the clothes are doing as much work as the view.

What you are looking at

Behind the rail, the harbour: forty or fifty small boats at their moorings on flat turquoise water, the lifeboat station on its stilts at the left, St Catherine's Island with its fort on the green headland in the middle, and the pastel terraces of Tenby running along the top of the cliff in lemon, pink, mint, blue and cream. A sandy beach below them, a lifeboat under way, and gulls right across the sky.

On the terrace, under a green and white striped awning, a table of diners in full period dress: floral maxi dresses, a wide-collared shirt, a woman in a red print blouse, an afro, a pair of enormous tinted glasses, and a man in a white shirt and tie. In the foreground, seen from behind, a woman in a sunflower-print sundress with a fringed shoulder bag leaning on the railing, a girl beside her with a red bag. A beagle asleep under the table.

What it is like to build

Three bands, and the middle one is the hard one. The bottom is figures and awning, all strong colour and hard shapes. The top is a row of pastel houses, each a different colour, which sorts easily. The middle is the harbour, and it is forty boats at small scale on flat water.

Build the awning and the railing first, since they are the only hard geometry in the foreground. Then the houses along the cliff, colour by colour. Then the boats, one at a time, using their hull colours, and let the water fill in around them last. The water is easier than it looks because it is genuinely flat, so it carries reflections directly below each hull.

Why the Gibsons build matters

Gibsons have been British since 1919 and make their 1000 piece puzzles in the UK and Europe on 100% recycled board. On a picture where half the pleasure is the small detail of the boats and the clothing, print resolution is doing as much as the cut. Plastic-free, tab-sealed box.

A little context

Named-place British seaside scenes sell to people who have been there, which makes them behave more like a city collage than a generic landscape. Tenby specifically is one of the most painted harbours in Wales, and for a builder that pastel terrace is a gift: a row of buildings in a dozen different colours is the easiest structure a picture can offer.
