A green express locomotive standing at Platform 5 with a family going to the seaside, some time around 1960. The engine is head-on and enormous, and the bucket and spade in the boy's hand tells you everything about where they are going.
The locomotive fills the left half, seen from the front: a huge black smokebox door with 45706 on the numberplate, green boiler cladding, red buffer beam and running plate, steam drifting up into the station roof. A rake of maroon carriages behind it. Two railwaymen in uniform standing on the far platform beside a signal box.
On the right, the platform under an ornate glazed canopy on decorative iron columns. A blue PLATFORM 5 sign, a red station clock reading nearly ten past two, a hanging lamp, and a gold and maroon board reading EXPRESS TO BLACKPOOL (CENTRAL). A footbridge crosses at the top left. Waiting: a woman in a yellow cardigan with a child, a man in a brown jacket, a woman in a blue cable-knit cardigan with a beehive, a teenager in a leather jacket, and in the front two boys, one in a white sunhat and striped shirt with a spade and a bucket, the other in a green polo shirt holding a toy yacht. Suitcases and a folded pushchair on the platform in front of them.
The locomotive is a large area of near-black and it is the hardest thing here, not the easiest. Build its outline first using the red buffer beam and the numberplate, then work inward, but expect the smokebox itself to be slow.
The people and the luggage are the fun part. Every figure is a strong single colour, and the two suitcases are hard-edged blocks of blue. The canopy ironwork is a repeating decorative pattern that goes in by rhythm. Leave the platform paving and the track ballast for last, since both are low-contrast grey fields with no drawing.
Gibsons have been British since 1919 and make their 1000 piece puzzles in the UK and Europe on 100% recycled board, thick enough that the pieces hold their shape. That matters on an image with this much dark: thin board shows a pale grey core at the cut edge, and a hundred pale edges scattered across a black locomotive is the sort of thing you notice once and cannot unsee.

Steam railway scenes are one of the permanent fixtures of this category rather than a trend, and they behave like nostalgia collages: bought by somebody for whom the detail is the point. Getting a real locomotive number right matters to that buyer in a way it does not to anybody else, which is why good publishers bother. Derived from multiple public data sources across retail, search and community platforms, refreshed 31 August 2026.
