Gibsons - Holiday Hustle 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A London shopping street at sunset with the Christmas lights already on and everybody crossing at once. Painted by Richard Macneil, and the thing that makes it is the sky: hot orange behind cold blue buildings.

What you are looking at

A wide street lined with grand stone-fronted buildings, strung overhead with big illuminated snowflake and roundel decorations on catenary wires. A red double-decker bus and two black cabs in the traffic, a cyclist between them, and lit shopfronts with decorated trees standing outside along the left. On the right, a roasted chestnut stall with a red sign and a queue at it.

Across the foreground, a zebra crossing full of shoppers in coats and scarves carrying shopping bags, umbrellas up, seen mostly from behind as they cross away from you. Wet road reflecting the light, pigeons at the kerb, and above all of it a sunset going from gold at the horizon to violet at the top.

What it is like to build

The sky and the crossing are the two big jobs and they are opposites. The sky is a large smooth gradient with the light decorations silhouetted against it, so sort those pieces into bands by tone from gold up to violet and lay them out in order before placing any.

The crossing is the opposite problem, dense with small high-contrast detail. The white stripes of the zebra crossing are the single most useful feature in the picture: hard-edged, regular and running the full width, so build them early and use them as a baseline. Then each pedestrian is a small block of one strong coat colour. The buildings are the slow middle, repeating stone windows in near-identical grey, and they go in last.

Why the Gibsons build matters

Gibsons have been British since 1919 and make their 1000 piece puzzles in the UK and Europe on 100% recycled board. Thick board matters on an image with this much dark: thin board shows its grey core at the cut edge, and a hundred pale edges scattered across a night street is the sort of thing you notice once and then cannot stop seeing. The box is plastic-free and tab-sealed.

A little context

City-at-Christmas scenes sell well past the season in a way that a Santa picture does not, because the buyer is often choosing the city rather than the holiday. That makes them a safer thing to have on the table in January, and a safer thing to buy in September.
