What you are looking at

A collage of period covers and objects: television annuals, record sleeves, magazines, board game boxes, a Filofax, a Rubik's Cube solution booklet, a Trivial Pursuit set, a home computer with rubber keys, a mug, badges and a small figurine or two. Everything is photographed from directly above and layered like a pile that has been spread out on a table, so nearly every object is partly covered by another one.

What it is like to build

A collage is the friendliest 1000 piece format there is. Every piece carries part of a distinct object with its own colour, typography and photograph, so there is no field of sky and no field of grass. You can genuinely sort by object rather than by region.

Type is your best friend. Sort out every piece with letters on it first and group them by typeface and colour, because a piece of a red logo is unambiguous in a way that a piece of a blue sky never is. Then work object by object. The only difficult area is the overlapping edges, where three items meet and the piece shows a slice of each, and those are the last to go in. A good puzzle to do in company, because everyone will want to identify something.
