Gibsons - Sunset on the Seine 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A brasserie on a corner of the Seine at the moment the streetlights come on and the sky is still pink. Painted by David Maclean, and it is doing the trick every good evening scene does: two light sources, warm from inside and cool from above, working against each other.

What you are looking at

Down the left, the river with a red-and-white houseboat moored against the quay, a rowing boat pulled up on the cobbles, and a stone bridge crossing in the middle distance. Behind it the Eiffel Tower, lit, against a pink and violet sunset. On the right, the Brasserie de Saint-Louis with a red awning, gold light pouring out of every window, tables and bentwood chairs on the pavement, a chalkboard menu, and a striped parasol. Ivy and window boxes up the facade. In the foreground, a red bicycle with flowers in the basket, a green bicycle leaning on a lamppost, a purple Vespa, framed paintings propped along the quay wall, buckets of cut flowers, and a navy-blue vintage car parked at the kerb.

What it is like to build

Start with the awning. It is the only large block of pure saturated red in the picture and it fixes the right-hand third immediately. Then the lit windows, which are unmistakable gold. Then the Eiffel Tower, which is a strong dark lattice against a bright sky.

The cobbles are the long haul. The whole bottom third is wet grey-blue paving with reflected light in it, and there is no drawing to follow. The way through is the reflections: sort the cobble pieces by which colour is reflected in them, warm gold near the brasserie, cool violet near the water. That splits an undifferentiated field into two halves that belong on opposite sides of the picture.

Why the Gibsons build matters
