Gibsons - The Japanese Garden 100 Piece XXL Jigsaw Puzzle

100 pieces, each roughly four times the size of a normal piece, with a full adult picture on it. That combination is rarer than it sounds and it is the whole reason this exists.

Who this is actually for

Almost everything with big pieces is aimed at small children, which leaves anybody whose hands or eyes are not what they were choosing between a picture they find patronising and a puzzle they cannot comfortably handle. A 100XXL is the answer to that, and it is also simply a relaxed hour for anyone who wants a finished picture in one sitting.

What you are looking at

A Japanese garden in spring, painted by Janice Daughters. A red and white teahouse with a green tiled upswept roof and a large round moon window stands in the upper middle, with a figure in a yellow kimono on its veranda. To the right, a vermilion arched bridge over a stream with koi in it, and a red pagoda-roofed lantern in the foreground.

Everywhere else, flowers: cherry blossom in pink and white across the top, azaleas, camellias in deep pink at the bottom left, magnolia on the right, yellow forsythia, purple wisteria and alliums, a copper-red acer, and clipped mounds of green. A grey stone lantern, raked gravel, a bamboo water spout, a wooden signpost, and a snow-capped peak just visible top right.

What it is like to build

An hour, and pleasant throughout. At 100 pieces the border is a quarter of the puzzle, so build the frame and you are already well in. The teahouse and the bridge are the only red objects and they anchor the middle. After that the flowers go in by colour, and at this piece size each one carries several blooms rather than a fragment, which is what makes it easy. There is no grind anywhere in this puzzle, which is the point of it.

Why the Gibsons build matters

Gibsons have been British since 1919 and print on 100% recycled board. At this piece size board thickness is what separates a satisfying piece from a floppy one, and theirs is thick. Planet-friendly, tab-sealed box, no shrink wrap.

A little context

Large-piece adult puzzles are one of the genuinely underserved corners of the market and we think the format deserves more attention than it gets. If you are buying for someone in a care setting, or for a grandparent who has started finding 1000 pieces a chore, this is the honest answer and it does not require anybody to admit anything.
