Gibsons - Wish You Were Here 4 x 500 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Four 500 piece puzzles in one box, all four of them a British seaside holiday in about 1962. Painted by Trevor Mitchell, whose whole subject is the ordinary day that everybody remembers.

What you are looking at

The funfair: a crazy golf course with a windmill and a toadstool hole, a family putting, a carousel and a big wheel behind. The high street: a promenade of shops with bunting overhead, a Kodak film sign, beach balls hanging in a net, a seafood stall at the end of the road, a Vespa at the kerb. The boating lake: rowing boats on flat water, a miniature railway running along the bank with a blue engine, parasols and ducks. The beach: a wide sandy bay with bathing huts, a boating hire shed, donkeys, and the headland behind.

What it is like to build

Four evenings rather than one campaign, and that suits most people better. Each puzzle finishes at 48 by 34 cm, so all four will fit on a normal table if you want them out together, and each one is bagged separately in the box.

The beach is the hardest of the four and the boating lake is second. Both have a large area of one thing, sand in the first case and flat water in the second, with the detail pushed to the edges. The high street and the funfair are both dense with colour and signage and will fall together fast. Do the two easy ones first if you want the set finished, because finishing is a habit.
