What you are looking at

The island is a heart seen point-down, cut away so you can see both halves. On top, a green meadow with a spreading tree, two cypresses, banks of pink, red and orange roses around the rim, and a stream winding through. Four unicorns: an adult grazing, a second standing, and two foals lying in the grass, all pale lilac with white manes. Butterflies over the flowers.

Underneath, the earth: red-brown soil threaded with fine roots, and three dark cavities lined with pale crystals, geodes inside the island. A single tiny bird hangs in one of them. Four waterfalls spill from the underside and fall away into cloud. A full rainbow arcs behind, and the whole thing sits in a pink sky with clouds and stars, inside a faint transparent dome.

What it is like to build

The square format changes the border and it is worth knowing. All four sides are the same length, so unlike a rectangle you cannot sort edge pieces into long and short runs. Build the corners first and work from them.

Inside, the picture is generous. The island is a hard-edged heart against a flat pink sky, so that silhouette comes together fast and immediately halves the puzzle. Then the top surface, where the roses give you a dense band of saturated colour, and the unicorns, which are the only lilac in the frame. The pink sky is the hard part, a large smooth field with only the rainbow and a few clouds in it, and it goes in last by tone.

Heye are German and have built their name on printing artwork nobody else would take, which is why their catalogue looks so unlike everyone else's. The Quadrat format is a deliberate choice rather than a gimmick: a square finishes smaller than a standard 1000 and suits a small table, and it hangs differently on a wall.
