Heye - In/Outside: Intruding House 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A derelict timber house has grown up through the floor of a gilded ballroom, and a forest has come in with it. From Heye's In/Outside series, and it is the strangest image in the range.

What you are looking at

The room is real enough: a coffered and gilded ceiling in ochre and rose, tall arched windows with deep crimson velvet curtains, patterned walls in blue and green, and a marble floor with a few pieces of furniture still standing against the far wall.

And then the outside has arrived. Tall bare tree trunks rise through the room and out of frame. Fallen logs lie across the floor. Water has pooled and is running between them, reflecting the ceiling. Reeds, ferns and long grass grow up the walls. On the right, a two-storey clapboard house with a pitched roof, a porch and a white picket fence stands fully inside the room, its own windows dark, ivy over its walls. Through the ballroom windows there is only white light.

What it is like to build

Two vocabularies, and separating them is the whole method. Everything in this picture is either architecture, which is straight, ornamented and warm-toned, or vegetation, which is organic, tangled and green. Sort on that before anything else and the puzzle halves.

Build the ceiling first. It is a regular coffered grid in strong ochre and it is the most structured thing in the image. Then the crimson curtains, the only saturated red. Then the house, which has hard clapboard lines and a white fence. The floor is the hard region, water and fallen timber and reflection all at once, low contrast and chaotic, and it should be last.

Why Heye

Heye are German and have built their reputation on picking artwork nobody else would print. The In/Outside series is exactly that: not decorative, not comfortable, and much more interesting to spend a week with than another cottage garden. Their board and cut are to the German standard.
