Heye - Zozoville: Neighbourhood 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A large hairy creature is wearing a house. Or possibly the house has grown a creature. Either way it is standing in the middle of a street looking extremely pleased with itself, and a cat on the wall has noticed.

What you are looking at

The centre of the picture is a shaggy brown monster, roughly house-shaped, with a red pantiled roof sitting on its head like a fringe, a chimney and an aerial on top, two seagulls circling, and two window frames set into its lower half where a ground floor would be. It has two large scaly feet planted on the road and a small tail. It is smiling, with two visible teeth, and its eyes are hidden under the roof.

Around it, a rundown street in muted browns and greys: a timber-framed house on the left with a striped awning and a bicycle leaning against a fence, a taller building behind, a red-roofed tower on the right, a rust-coloured tree, a discarded plank, a bucket and a bird box. A grey cat sits on a low wall at the bottom right watching the whole thing. The paint is soft and slightly grubby, and the whole image is framed as though it were a worn photograph.

What it is like to build

Portrait format, and the monster is the entire structure. Build it first: the red roof is the only saturated colour in the picture, the fur is the only large soft texture, and together they occupy the middle third.

Then the buildings behind, which give you the only straight lines. The difficulty is the palette. Almost everything outside the creature is a muted brown, ochre or grey-green at low contrast, which means colour stops separating things quickly. Sort by texture instead: brick, timber, roof tile, fur, sky. The pale cream sky is the last job.

Why Heye

Heye are German and their whole editorial position is licensing artwork other publishers would not touch. Zozoville is a Berlin studio, and their work is exactly that: technically accomplished oil painting of things that make no sense at all. Their board and cut are to the German standard.

A little context

Surreal and lowbrow art is a small corner of this category and Heye more or less own it. It sells to somebody who is buying the picture rather than the pastime, and it finishes as something people actually frame. If the mainstream of the category feels like a wall of cottages and kittens, this is the shelf to look at instead.
