Wasgij - Original 36: New Year 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

The picture on the box is not the puzzle. In an Original, you build what one character in the scene can see, and here it is a woman in a gym on the second of January, watching everybody's resolutions collapse.

Which Wasgij is this

In an Original you build the scene from a character's point of view, which appears nowhere on the packaging. In a Mystery you build what happens next. In a Destiny you build the same place at another time. Three strands, three genuinely different puzzles. Here the instruction is to puzzle what the lady sees, and she is the woman shown on the side of the box, mid-shout.

What is on the box

A gym in early January, gone badly wrong. A NEW YEAR NEW YOU banner over the door, a HEALTHY FOOD chart and a diet poster on the wall, and a wall of exercise bikes and step machines all occupied. In the middle, a large woman in a blue vest and red shorts is roaring. Around her: a man collapsed over a rowing machine, someone being weighed on a set of scales and not enjoying it, a woman in a leotard mid-aerobics, a man in an orange tracksuit up a ladder hanging decorations, a dog that has got in somehow, spilled water bottles and a discarded doughnut, and a queue of people at the door in ordinary clothes having second thoughts.

What it is like to build

Sort by colour family and by line, because you have no reference picture. Skin tones, the pale green of the gym walls, the primary colours of the sportswear, the grey of the equipment. Wasgij art is heavy black outline over flat fill, so any piece carrying a line is worth several that do not.

Build the border properly and treat it as load-bearing, since it is one of very few certainties. Expect longer than a standard 1000 and a better payoff. The reveal at the end is the product.

Wasgij back numbers go out of print rather than being reprinted, and each strand is numbered separately, so a gap in a collection tends to stay a gap. Being a New Zealand-made Holdson edition also makes this a locally produced puzzle in a category dominated by Germany and China.
