Wasgij - Xmas 21: Merry Makeover 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

The picture on this box is not the puzzle inside it. That is the entire point of Wasgij, and if you have never built one it is genuinely a different activity from every other puzzle on this site.

Before you buy, one thing worth knowing. We stock this exact title in two editions. This is the Holdson single edition: one 1000 piece puzzle, made in New Zealand. There is also a Jumbo Special Edition of this title, which is a different box containing two 1000 piece puzzles rather than one. The two editions are not the same product, so it is worth reading both pages before you choose.

How a Wasgij actually works

The box shows you a scene. Your job is to build what one character in that scene can see, which is a completely different picture that appears nowhere on the packaging. On this one the instruction is explicit: don't puzzle what you see, puzzle what Mrs Claus sees. Her reaction, front and centre in a pink fur coat with her hands to her face, is the only clue you get about what she is looking at.

So you build it from logic and from the pieces themselves, not from a reference image. That is either the best thing you have ever heard about a jigsaw or the worst, and there is not much middle ground.

What is on the box

A grand department store hall dressed for Christmas: a gold ceiling, chandeliers and hot air balloon decorations hanging, a big decorated tree with a gold bow, cone-shaped feature trees in pink and blue. A man in a blue suit with his arms spread wide, mid-presentation, with a thoroughly alarmed reindeer beside him. Santa in the crowd, a nutcracker guard in a bearskin on the left, a snowman, and a crowd of shoppers reacting. Mrs Claus is the one in pink.

What it is like to build

Build the edge, then sort ruthlessly by colour and texture, because that is all you have. No reference picture means the usual method is gone. What replaces it is grouping: all the skin tones, all the ceiling gold, all the floor. Wasgij artwork is drawn in hard black outline with flat fills, so pieces carrying a line are far more useful than pieces that do not, exactly as in any cartoon puzzle.

Expect it to take longer than a normal 1000 and to be more satisfying when it lands. The reveal at the end is the product.

Wasgij is a numbered series and the Christmas titles are numbered separately from the rest, so collectors follow two sequences. Being a New Zealand-made Holdson edition also makes this a locally produced puzzle in a category dominated by Germany and China, which is unusual enough to be worth saying.
