Jumbo - Notre Dame, Paris Puzzle 1000pc

What you are looking at

The cathedral from the south east, which is the angle that shows you the most: the two square west towers on the left, the long lead roof running away to the right, the flying buttresses along the flank, and the south rose window, which is the enormous wheel of tracery in the centre of the picture. Above it, the spire. The original was designed by Viollet-le-Duc in the nineteenth century, came down in the fire of April 2019 and was rebuilt to the same design, and the cathedral reopened in December 2024. Below the building, the plane trees of the quay, the iron railings, and the stone river wall with ivy on it running the full width of the bottom of the image.

What it is like to build

Three horizontal bands, and they are three separate puzzles. The top band is blue sky with a few clouds and it is the easy part, sorted by tone. The middle band is the cathedral, all pale limestone, and it is the interesting part. The bottom band is trees and river wall, dense green and mid-brown, and it is the hard part.

The trick with the stonework is to follow the vertical rhythm. Gothic architecture repeats on a fixed beat: buttress, window, buttress, window. Once you have the rose window placed, count outward along the flank and you can predict where a piece belongs from the spacing of the mullions rather than from the colour, which is the same limestone everywhere. Save the tree canopy for last and place it by shape.

Why Jumbo
