Ravensburger - Positano Italy 1000 Piece Adult's Puzzle

What you are looking at

In the foreground, a marble balustrade and a tiled terrace with a linen-covered table: two glasses of red wine, a bottle, a lit candle and a small pizza. Two carved wooden chairs with red seats. Beyond the rail, the town: hundreds of pastel houses in apricot, rose, cream and terracotta climbing the cliff in tiers, windows lit gold, with the majolica-tiled dome of the church down on the right. To the left the headland drops into the Tyrrhenian sea, two boats moored below, and the sun sitting on the horizon under a bank of violet cloud, throwing a gold path across the water.

What it is like to build

Two completely different problems, split by the balustrade. The bottom third is large, close, high-contrast objects: table, chairs, flowers. It goes quickly and it is the fun part.

The town is the campaign. Several hundred small pastel buildings at the same scale, all lit the same way, with no straight lines long enough to follow. The way in is the light: the houses are warmer and more saturated low down near the water and cooler and hazier as they climb. Sort the town pieces into three bands by how washed-out they are and place them from the bottom up. The sky and sea are last, and both are smooth gradients, so lay them out in tonal order before you place any of them.
