Ravensburger - Ravensburg, Germany 1000 Piece Panorama Puzzle

This is Ravensburg, the town Ravensburger is named after and has made puzzles in since 1891. Photographed at dawn in autumn with fog lying over the roofs, as a panorama: 98 cm wide and 38 cm tall.

What you are looking at

The white tower standing clear of everything is the Mehlsack, the Flour Sack, a round sixteenth-century watchtower and the town's landmark. To its left, the ochre spire and red roof of a church, and below that the old town: red pantiled roofs, gables, and a second stubbier tower on the far left.

Fog is sitting in the valley and moving through the town at roof height, lit pink and apricot by a sun that has not properly risen. Above it, a band of cloud in lilac and rose. In front, trees along the hillside, some still green and some fully turned to copper and gold. On the far right, a small castellated building catching the first direct light.

What it is like to build

The panorama shape is the friendliest thing about it. At only about fourteen pieces tall, nothing is ever far from a known edge. Build the top and bottom borders first and you have two rails to work between.

The Mehlsack is the anchor, a hard white cylinder against soft pink fog, and it is the only thing in the picture with a crisp outline. Then the church spire and the roofs, which give you the only straight lines.

The fog is the puzzle. Roughly half the image is soft pink and grey vapour with no structure at all. It is not flat, though: it is lit warm from the right and cool from the left, so sort by temperature and place from the light source outward. The autumn trees are the easy reward at the end.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters here

Made in Germany since 1891, in this town. No two pieces in a 1000 piece share a shape, which on several hundred pieces of undifferentiated fog is close to the only signal you have. Thick board, linen-textured low-glare laminate.

A little context

There is something quietly good about a puzzle company printing its own home town, and it is the sort of detail worth knowing while you build it: the pieces in your hand were made a few streets from the tower in the picture. Panorama is also an underrated format, easier than a standard 1000 because nothing is far from an edge, though it does want a metre of clear table.
