Ravensburger - Autumn in Venice 1000 Piece Adult's Jigsaw Puzzle

A back canal in Venice with nobody in it, in the week the creeper turns. No gondolas, no landmarks, no crowd. Just brick, water and a wall of red leaves, and it is the better for it.

What you are looking at

A narrow canal running away from you between two buildings, so close together you could touch both. On the left, a rose-pink rendered wall with the plaster failing in patches to show the brick underneath, teal-blue shutters, and two wrought iron balconies loaded with terracotta pots of succulents, trailing greenery and a small palm. On the right, an old brick wall, and above it Virginia creeper turning the full range from green through orange to deep scarlet, tumbling down over the parapet.

Further back, an apricot-rendered house with a terracotta pantile roof, a green-shuttered window and a street lamp on a bracket, and beyond that a brick building with arched windows and a small balcony. Ivy massed on a wall at the turn of the canal. The water is a still opaque green, reflecting the pink and brick above it in soft vertical smears.

What it is like to build

Brick is the difficulty and it covers most of the picture. Old Venetian brick is a mottled red-brown with no regular pattern at piece scale, so colour and texture both stop helping quickly.

Work the boundaries. The blue shutters, the iron balconies, the terracotta pots and the street lamp are the only hard-edged, strongly coloured objects, and every one you place gives you a fixed point in a wall of brick. The creeper is the second win, since the red and orange appear nowhere else. Then take the water, which is easier than it looks because the reflections are vertical smears: sort by which colour is smeared into the piece and you can tell left bank from right bank.
