Ravensburger - Beach Garden Café 1000 Piece Puzzle

A weatherboard cafe above a shingle beach, with the garden in the foreground getting far more attention than the building. From Ravensburger's Cosy Cafe Collection, painted by Anne Searle, and the plants are the reason to buy it.

What you are looking at

Up on the left, a blue and white timber cafe on stilts with a deck, a chalkboard menu and strings of triangular bunting running out from it. A man carrying a tray down the steps, people at the tables, and a stone wall with BEACH painted on it.

Across the middle, the beach itself: families on the shingle, small boats pulled up, a couple of dinghies, children paddling, and a bay full of sailing boats with white and coloured sails running out to a headland. Seagulls everywhere, including one large one standing on a rock at the right, close enough to count its feathers.

The bottom half is the garden and it is doing the real work. Red hot pokers in orange and yellow, pink mallow, blue sea holly, mauve scabious, yellow horned poppy and pink daisies, growing out of a bank of grey pebbles with a rusted anchor chain snaking through them. Two butterflies and a moth on the flowers.

What it is like to build

Three horizontal bands, each a different job. The top is building and sky, structured and easy. The middle is beach and sea, busy with small figures. The bottom is dense mixed planting.

Start with the chain. It is the only rust-orange object in the frame, it has a strong repeating link pattern, and it runs right through the foreground, which gives you a spine in the hardest region. Then the bunting, for the same reason at the top. Then the flowers by type, because each species is a different colour and shape: pokers, mallow, sea holly, poppy. The pebbles are the last job, several hundred grey and buff stones with no order to them, and they go in by shape alone.
