What you are looking at

A loose, wet watercolour illustration in the storybook style that has taken over the adult puzzle shelf in the last few years. The whole picture is built from bleeding washes: a magenta blossom tree on the right, hanging paper stars and butterflies through the middle, and an ornate gold-orange scrollwork band running along the bottom edge. Look for the second frog, sitting in the lower centre in a green checked coat, easy to miss on a first pass.

What it is like to build

This is a colour-sort puzzle, not a shape-sort puzzle, and that makes it kinder than it looks. Nothing in the image repeats. Every region is a different hue: teal robe, salmon cardigan, magenta canopy, gold scroll. Pull four or five piles by dominant colour before you place anything and the picture assembles faster than a 1000 piece usually does.

The soft edges are the real work. Watercolour has no hard lines, so a piece will often show three tones blending with no boundary to grip. When you stall, switch to the scrollwork along the bottom, which is the only crisp linework in the picture, and build upward from it. Good first 1000 piece for someone stepping up from 500.
