A very serious grey tabby floating in a nebula, surrounded by cartoon astronaut cats, at 1500 pieces of mostly deep space. The joke is on the box. The difficulty is in the other 1200 pieces.
A photographic grey and white tabby with round yellow eyes and a white bib, front paws tucked under, filling the left of centre and looking straight out of the picture with an expression of total indifference. Behind it, a deep field of stars: indigo and violet through the middle, cold blue to the left, and a band of pink and orange nebula cloud running diagonally behind the cat's head.
Scattered through the star field are small orange cartoon cats in bubble helmets, drawn flat and simply, one of them tucked under the tabby's chin. There are also thin white line drawings of cats picked out among the stars like constellations, which are easy to miss and worth finding. A fourth cartoon cat looks in from outside the frame at top left.
Buy this one knowing what it is: a star field puzzle with a cat in it. The cat is roughly a fifth of the area. The rest is dark ground with white dots, and at 1500 pieces that is a serious amount of it. If that sounds like the wrong kind of evening, it genuinely is, and we would rather say so than have you find out on a Sunday.
If it sounds like the right kind, sort the sky by colour temperature rather than by darkness. There are three distinct fields: a cold blue one on the left, a warm pink and orange nebula band through the middle, and a violet one on the right. Get those three piles apart and the puzzle becomes possible.
Then use star density as a second sort. The stars are small and densely packed towards the top of the picture and larger and sparser near the cat, so a piece with three big stars on it belongs in a different region from a piece with twenty small ones. The cartoon cats and the line-drawn constellations are your only hard landmarks in the dark, so place every one of them before you start filling.
Made in Germany since 1891, no two pieces alike, which on a sky like this is the only thing telling you a piece is right. Worth measuring your table first: at 80 x 60 cm finished this is a real step up in area from a 1000, around a third bigger, and it does not fit comfortably on a table that takes a 1000 with room to sort.

Difficulty is a category in its own right and a star field is one of its classic forms, alongside all-one-colour and pure gradient puzzles. Worth being clear that the difficulty here comes from the absence of information rather than from the number of pieces, which is why a hard 1500 can take longer than an easy 2000. The rest of this size band is at 1500 Pieces. Across the market this is the thin end: on our index of the category, 1000 piece titles are close to half of everything tracked, and 1500 and above is a small fraction of that.
