Ravensburger - Christmas Cookie Village 1000 Piece Adult's Jigsaw Puzzle

An entire town built out of gingerbread, iced in pastel, packed corner to corner with no sky worth speaking of. This is a hard puzzle dressed up as a sweet one, and you should know that before you start it.

What you are looking at

Rows of gingerbread houses climbing a hillside, each one piped with white royal icing and studded with sweets: peppermint swirls, gumdrops, candy canes, jelly beans. Windows glowing yellow, doors in every colour, snow made of white icing along the roof lines. Gingerbread cars parked between them in pink, blue, brown and red. Sugar mountains along the top with a piped sun and clouds. Iced fir trees, a snowman, a gingerbread reindeer, and a gingerbread man or two if you look for them.

What it is like to build

The difficulty is repetition, not detail. There are perhaps sixty houses and they are built from the same handful of shapes: a gable, a door, a row of windows, a scalloped roof edge. At piece scale, four different houses can look identical, and colour will not save you because the palette is deliberately soft and even throughout.

So sort by architectural feature rather than by colour. Roof lines, window rows, door arches, and the vehicles, which are the only curved objects in a picture of straight gables and therefore the easiest things to place. The sugar mountains and sky along the top are the one low-detail band, do them early while you are fresh, then work down the hill in horizontal strips using the roof lines as your rails.

On a picture with this much repetition, no two pieces sharing the same shape is not a nicety, it is the mechanism that stops you seating a piece from the wrong house and not discovering it for forty minutes.
