Ravensburger - Christmas Market 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

What you are looking at

A market square under a dark blue night sky with falling snow. Along the top, a terrace of narrow stepped-gable houses in mustard, red, teal, pink and green, their windows lit yellow. A big decorated Christmas tree in the centre with a star on top and a striped candy-cane arch beside it.

Market stalls fill both sides with red and white striped roofs: one selling food with a chalkboard, one a toy stall, one hung with wreaths and greenery, one with hot drinks and steam rising. In front, several dozen small figures in bright coats moving between the stalls, children, a dog, a hand cart, and a stall keeper leaning out to serve.

What it is like to build

Flat illustration is the friendliest kind of dense. Every shape has a hard boundary and a solid fill, so there is no gradient anywhere to get lost in and almost every piece carries a clear edge you can match.

Build the houses first. The terrace across the top is a row of large flat colour blocks with straight roof lines, and each house is a different colour, so they sort themselves. Then the striped stall roofs, which are the strongest repeating pattern in the picture. Then the tree. The figures go last, and they go quickly, because each person is two or three saturated colours and nothing else in the frame is that colour.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters here

Made in Germany since 1891, and flat solid ink is precisely where a mediocre cut shows: large areas of one colour with no texture leave you relying entirely on fit. No two pieces in a 1000 piece share a shape. The linen-textured, low-glare laminate also does more on flat colour than on a photograph, because solid ink is what shines under a lamp.
