What you are looking at

A large Victorian villa with steep roofs, dormers, chimney stacks and a round corner tower, its windows glowing gold against deep blue. What it is like to build

Night scenes are their own discipline and this is a good one to learn on. Roughly half the image is dark: blue-black sky, dark roofs, shadowed snow. But unlike a plain night sky, this one has structure, because the moon lights the cloud from behind and the house lights the snow from in front.

Build the house, then the gates, then stop and sort the dark. The lit windows are the easiest pieces in the box and they fix the whole building. The ironwork of the gates is the only fine repeating line. After that, separate your dark pieces into sky, roof and shadowed snow by tone rather than by colour, because at piece scale they are all simply "dark" until you hold two of them side by side.
