What you are looking at

A narrow street running away from you. On the left a bow-fronted toy shop, its window full of a lit tree, a rocking horse and wrapped presents, with a purple hanging sign reading St George's Toy Shop. On the right a half-timbered building with a gold pub clock on an ornate bracket, brass bells and a wreath. Gas lamps down both sides, garlands over the doors, small decorated trees in pots along the pavement.

In the middle distance a horse-drawn hansom cab with the driver up on the box, and beyond it the clock tower of Big Ben against a deep blue sky. A tabby cat crossing the pavement on the left, a dog trotting across the cobbles on the right, and pigeons in the foreground.

What it is like to build

The street is a funnel and you should build it like one. Both sides of the picture converge on the tower, so establish the two building lines first and the perspective does a lot of your sorting: a piece of warm brick belongs on the left, a piece of dark timber on the right.

The cobbles are the long haul. The bottom third is wet stone reflecting gold from the lamps and blue from the sky, with no drawing to follow. Sort those pieces by which colour is reflected in them, warm nearer the shop windows and cold down the middle of the road, and the undifferentiated grey field becomes two halves that belong in different places.
