Marina Corricella on Procida, in the Bay of Naples, at 1500 pieces. Several hundred pastel houses stacked up a cliff above a harbour full of boats, and it is a serious commitment rather than an evening.

What you are looking at

A fishing harbour seen from above and slightly along. The houses climb the slope in tiers, painted in every colour a village has ever been painted: apricot, rose, lemon, mint, terracotta, white, dusty blue, with arched loggias, external staircases, flat roofs and washing lines. Nothing is quite square and nothing quite matches its neighbour. On the right, a large ochre church with a grey dome and a bell tower stands above the rest.

Below, the quay and then the water: a long line of small fishing boats moored bow-in along the harbour wall, and dozens more on the turquoise water, white launches, wooden dinghies, one blue hull. Beyond, the open sea in deep blue running to a headland on the horizon under a hazy sky.

What it is like to build

1500 pieces finishes at 80 x 60 cm, which is bigger than a lot of dining tables allow. Measure first, or work on a board you can move, because this is not finishing in one sitting.

The colour is what makes it possible. Every house is a different pastel, so unlike a grey cityscape you can sort by hue and each pile is a small group of buildings. Build the church first, the only large ochre mass with a dome. Then the harbour wall, a hard horizontal running the width. Then work up the hill colour by colour.

The two hard regions are the open sea and the hazy sky, both large and smooth, and both should be last. The moored boats are worth doing early, because each is a small white landmark against turquoise.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters at this size

At 1500 the pieces get smaller and the tolerance for a sloppy cut disappears.
