Ravensburger - Disney Stitch Challenge 1000 Piece Puzzle

This is a Ravensburger Challenge, and Challenge means what it says. Roughly two hundred Stitches, packed edge to edge with no background, no horizon and no gaps, all in four or five shades of the same blue.

What you are looking at

A wall of overlapping Stitches in every pose the character has: grinning, tongue out, sulking, upside down. Almost all of them are the same mid blue with the same pink-lilac ears and the same red mouth. There are exactly three things in the picture that are not: Angel, in pink, in the upper left. A Stitch in a red Hawaiian shirt, lower centre right. And Scrump, the rag doll, tucked into the right-hand side. Those three are the only landmarks you get in the entire 1000 pieces.

What it is like to build

Do not sort by colour, because there is only one colour. Sort by feature. Make piles for pieces carrying a black eye, pieces carrying a red mouth, pieces carrying an ear tip, pieces carrying a claw, and pieces that are pure flat blue with nothing on them at all. That last pile is the one that decides how long this takes.

Then anchor on the three oddities. Build Angel, the red shirt and Scrump as separate islands, and use them to fix the geometry of the middle. Work the border in properly, because here the straight edge really is worth having. After that it is patient, methodical, and genuinely satisfying in a way an easy puzzle never is. Expect several sessions, not one.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters, and here it is the entire product

On a normal puzzle, unique piece shapes are a quality nicety. On this one they are the only reason it is solvable at all. No two pieces in a 1000 piece Ravensburger share the same shape, so when the picture stops helping, the cut is still telling you the truth.
