Ravensburger - Disney Villainous: Gaston 1000 Piece Puzzle

The composition is a joke with a structure. In the foreground, Gaston's back, holding up the magic mirror, which is showing him his own delighted face rather than Belle. Above the fireplace, a hunting-lodge portrait of him flexing on a rock. Around that, every wall is covered in framed scenes from Beauty and the Beast: Belle in the village, Mrs Potts and Chip, the enchanted rose under its bell jar, the Beast in the west wing, LeFou, the mob with torches. Antlers everywhere, a fur throw over the chair on the right, arrows in a quiver by the hearth, and a real fire lit in the grate. The green glow spilling out of the mirror and the Beast's gold gauntlet on the right are the two magic elements in an otherwise mundane room.

What it is like to build

The framed pictures are the whole strategy. Two dozen small, self-contained, high-contrast images tiled across the walls. Each one is effectively a 20 to 40 piece mini-puzzle with a hard rectangular border, so you can pick one off, finish it, and set it into the grid. That makes this an unusually satisfying puzzle to do in short sittings.

The wood panelling between them is the slow part. Warm brown planks with a repeating grain that gives you very little. Do the pictures, do the fire, do Gaston's red tunic, and leave the panelling to be filled in by elimination. The dark antlers against dark wood at the top edge are the hardest single region.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters here

Made in Germany since 1891, and in a 1000 piece Ravensburger no two pieces share a shape. On the wood panelling that is doing all the work for you, because the grain will happily accept a piece that is wrong. Thick board and a linen-textured, low-glare finish, which matters on an image this dark: a glossy laminate would turn the whole tavern into a mirror.
