What it is like to build

Take the fireplace first. It is the only large area of pale stone and it has hard straight edges. Then the tree, where every piece carries a light or a bauble. Then the presents, which are the fun part: each parcel is a flat block of one saturated colour with a ribbon across it, so they seat quickly. The rug and the shadowed floor are the last job, and they go in by tone.
