What you are looking at

A long exposure from harbour level. The bottom third is water, and it is doing half the work: the whole scene repeats in it, broken into ripples, with the gold burst reflected as a shivering column straight down the middle.

What it is like to build

Fireworks are made of thin bright lines on near-black, which is a particular kind of hard. A piece carrying part of a trail is easy to spot and hard to place, because one gold streak looks much like another. The way through is direction: every streamer radiates from a known burst centre, so sort your firework pieces by which way the line runs and you can assign them to a burst before you place them.

Build the architecture first. The Opera House shells and the bridge arch are the only hard-edged, high-contrast objects and they fix the middle band of the picture. Then the city lights along the shore. The sky and the water are the two big fields, and they are different: the sky is smooth and almost featureless, the water is textured with ripple. Keep those two piles separate from the start and neither will overwhelm you.
