You are inside the teahouse looking out, and that is the whole trick of this picture. The dark timber interior frames a garden in full autumn colour, so the image is a cool shadowed room wrapped around a blaze of red and gold.

What you are looking at

Japanese maples in scarlet and copper, a weeping willow, clipped azaleas in pink, a stone lantern, and ferns spilling over the deck edge. And a peacock in full plumage standing on the veranda in the centre, with a second one behind it.

What it is like to build

Build the architecture first and the picture organises itself. The shoji screen grid, the veranda boards, the moon window and the roof beams are the only straight lines in the image, and they carve it into an interior half and a garden half.

Then take the strong colours in order. The vermilion of the bridge and the pavilion. The peacock, which is the only iridescent blue-green. The lanterns. Each is unique in the frame. The maples are the long middle, several hundred pieces of red and gold leaf at the same scale, and the trick there is depth: the near foliage is sharp and saturated, the far foliage is soft and pale. Sort on that before you sort on colour.
