Ravensburger - Leisure Days 13 Lazy Days by Steam 1000 Piece Puzzle

Number 13 in Ravensburger's Leisure Days series, and it is a wedding, a stone bridge, a swan and her cygnets, and about forty other things happening in one English village at once. The series is numbered, which means people collect it in order.

What you are looking at

A cobbled lane running down to a packhorse bridge over a shallow stream. A wedding party spilling out of the pub, a bride in white, a vintage Rolls at the top of the lane and a red open-top car parked below it. Two riders on horseback crossing the bridge, a third coming up behind. Children paddling in the stream among the rocks, a swan with cygnets in the pool below the weir, ducks upstream. Wisteria over the pub, a red telephone box, a red pillar box, sheep on the hill behind, a thatched cottage on the right, hydrangeas in the foreground and a cat asleep on the bridge parapet. A leaflet is included in the box.

What it is like to build

The bridge is the keystone. A large pale stone arch, hard-edged, dead centre, and it locks the middle of the image. Do the border, then the bridge, then the buildings, which are each a distinct colour of stone, render or thatch.

Then the two hard areas, and they are hard in opposite ways. The stream bed at the bottom is grey and brown rocks with broken white water over them, low contrast and no drawing. The flowerbeds down the left are high contrast but chaotic, every colour at the same scale. Take the stream first while you are fresh and use the flowers as the reward at the end, because at least a flower piece tells you something.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters on a painting like this

Made in Germany since 1891. No two pieces in a 1000 piece share a shape, which is what you want when four separate parts of a cobbled lane look identical. Thick board and a linen-textured, low-glare laminate, so a painted scene with this much fine detail does not disappear under a reflection when you put a lamp over it.
