Ravensburger - Leisure Days No 11: Day in the Dales 1000 Piece Puzzle

A classic car meet outside a Dales pub on a summer afternoon, painted by Kevin Walsh. Number 11 in Ravensburger's Leisure Days series, which people collect in order.

What you are looking at

On the left, a gritstone pub, the Bay Horse, with a hanging sign, a Black Sheep Ale plaque, a hanging basket, and a chalkboard advertising traditional English pub, beer garden, real ales and en-suite bedrooms. Drinkers at a table outside, a man leaning over to look at a car, a Jack Russell on the path.

On the grass in front, four cars. A red MGA with wire wheels, registration USU 339. A dark green MGB, GDD 400. A blue MG Midget with the hood down. A vintage blue and black open tourer further up the lane. A boy in a striped shirt reaching toward the red one, a woman sitting on its wing, a second Jack Russell with a yellow ball.

Beyond, the village runs downhill in grey stone and slate to a green with a war memorial, and the Dales open out behind in field walls and rounded fells. Swallows over the roofs, a cock pheasant flying across the middle, a big oak framing the top right, and piled cumulus. A leaflet is included in the box.

What it is like to build

The cars are the easy win and the reason to start there. Each is a large mass of one saturated colour with hard panel lines and chrome, and no two are the same colour.

Then the pub, which is the only large area of warm gold stone with straight window openings. The two hard regions are the fells and the sky. The fells are graded green divided by drystone walls, and the walls are the way in: they are thin pale lines that cut the hillside into fields you can work one at a time. The sky is big soft cumulus and goes in last by tone.
