A mountain lake so still it is holding the whole valley upside down, and shallow enough at the near edge that you can see the mossy boulders lying on the bottom. This is Piburger See in the Oetztal, Tyrol, and it is one of the best pieces of landscape photography in our range.

What you are looking at

The peak on the left with snow in its gullies is the Acherkogel. The forest running down both sides is larch, caught in the week it turns gold, against the darker spruce behind it. The sky is doing something photographers wait years for: high cirrus lit pink from below, and because the water is dead calm the whole thing repeats in the lake.

Then look at the bottom third. The water there is only inches deep and completely clear, so you are seeing green-gold boulders on the lake bed through the reflection of the sky. Two images occupying the same space. That is what makes this puzzle worth building and it is also what makes it hard.

The lake sits at 915 m and is 25 m deep at its deepest. It formed when a rockslide dammed a side valley after the last ice age, and it has been a protected nature reserve since 1929. Despite the altitude it warms to around 24 degrees in summer, which makes it one of the warmest mountain lakes in Tyrol.

What it is like to build

Build the mountain first, then the tree line, then stop and think. The peak is the only hard-edged high-contrast object in the picture, and the line where the forest meets the water runs the full width and splits the image cleanly in two.

The reflection is not a copy of the top half, and assuming it is will cost you an hour. It is darker, slightly compressed, and broken up by what is under the surface. Sort the lower half by whether a piece shows reflection, submerged rock, or both, because those three belong in different bands: pure reflection in the middle distance, rock at the near edge, and the mixed pieces in the transition between them.

The larches are the long grind. Several hundred pieces of gold and green needle texture at the same scale on both sides of the lake. Work them last, and use the shoreline you have already built to tell you which bank a piece belongs to: the left bank is in shadow, the right bank is lit.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters on an image like this

Ravensburger have been in Ravensburg since 1883 and still make their puzzles in Germany. In a 1000 piece Ravensburger, no two pieces share the same shape, so a piece that is nearly right will not seat convincingly. On a picture that contains the same scene twice, once upright and once reflected, that is the difference between an evening you enjoyed and one you spent undoing. Thick board and a linen-textured, low-glare laminate, which matters here because a glossy finish over a dark still lake reflects your lamp straight back at you.

A little context

Alpine lakes are a crowded subject and most of them are the same postcard: blue water, white peak, green trees. The ones worth owning are the ones with a second thing happening, and here it is the clear shallows letting you see through the reflection to the lake bed. If you like this, the same quality of light is what to look for across the rest of the landscape range.
