Ravensburger - New York Central Park Bow Bridge 1000 Piece Puzzle

What you are looking at

The cast iron bridge crosses the middle of the frame in a low pale arc with its decorative balustrade, a couple of walkers on it, and a horse and carriage on the path at the right-hand end. Behind and around it, the park in October: trees in every shade of green, gold, copper, scarlet and plum, painted leaf by leaf.

Above the tree line, the buildings. On the right, the twin ornamented towers of the San Remo. In the centre, a red brick apartment block with steep gables. Left of that, a green-roofed gothic building and a plain white slab, and on the far left a stepped art deco tower. A blue sky with soft cumulus.

Below, the Lake: two rowing boats and a green gondola with a gondolier, swans, ducks, lily pads, and a full inverted copy of the bridge, the trees and the skyline.

What it is like to build

The bridge is the spine and the reflection is the trap. Build the bridge first, since it is the only pale hard-edged horizontal in the picture. Then the buildings, each of which is a different colour and silhouette.

Then split the trees from the reflected trees and never let the piles mix. They are painted in the same palette, but the reflection is slightly darker, slightly wavier and broken by lily pads. Sorting on that once, at the start, saves an hour later. The autumn canopy is the long job, and the way in is that the painter has grouped his colours into distinct trees, so work tree by tree rather than colour by colour.
