What you are looking at

On the left, the American Falls, a long straight curtain of white water over a squared-off rock lip. On the right, the Canadian Horseshoe Falls curving away in a broad arc. Between them, a huge column of white spray rising higher than either, and a full rainbow coming down through it from the upper left.

Below, the plunge pool in bright turquoise, streaked with white foam in long curving lines, and the small red and white Maid of the Mist boat crossing the middle of it, crowded with passengers in red rain capes. Wooded parkland along both rims with visitor buildings and a Canadian flag on the right. Scarlet canna lilies in the bottom right corner, geese crossing the blue sky, and fat white cumulus above.

What it is like to build

Build the two rock lips first. They are the only hard horizontal edges in the picture, they run most of its width, and they separate the green top third from the white middle and the turquoise bottom.

Then the boat and the flowers, which are the only saturated reds. The white water is the hard region and it comes in two kinds: the falling curtains, which are vertical and streaked, and the mist column, which is a soft undifferentiated cloud. Keep those two piles apart. The turquoise pool is easier than it looks, because the foam lines curve and every curve points back toward the falls.
