Ravensburger - Pamplona, Spain 1500 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Looking straight up a narrow street in the old town of Pamplona, with the balconies closing in overhead and a church tower at the end of it. 1500 pieces, and the composition is almost entirely vertical.

What you are looking at

Two rows of tall old houses leaning in from left and right, painted in ochre, salmon, cream, grey-blue and dusty pink. Every one is stacked with wrought iron balconies and enclosed glazed galleries, most of them with plants, drying washing and shutters. Black iron street lamps on scrolled brackets project from the walls.

Between them, at the end of the street, the honey-coloured bell tower of the church of San Saturnino: a domed lantern on an octagonal drum, arched openings with the bells visible, carved stonework, and a large white clock face low down. A red flag hangs from a balcony on the right. A narrow strip of clear blue sky runs down the centre.

What it is like to build

1500 pieces finishes at 80 x 60 cm, which is bigger than a lot of dining tables allow. Measure first or work on a board you can move.

Build the tower first. It is the only large mass of pale stone and the only curved architecture in a picture of flat facades, and it sits at the vanishing point, so it anchors the whole perspective.

Then work the two walls separately and never mix them. Left and right are lit differently, one in sun and one in shade, which is the single most useful distinction available. Within each side, sort by building colour, since no two adjacent houses share one. The ironwork is the fiddly part, hundreds of thin black balusters against pale render, and it is best done once the wall behind it is in.
