What you are looking at

A cobbled path comes toward you down the centre of the frame, edged with rusted iron posts carrying slack wire and rope handrails. It runs out to a rock pinnacle in the middle distance, where a flight of steps has been cut into the stone and climbs up and around behind it.

On the left, the ridge falls away into a sea of cloud, flat and white, filling the whole left side with two dark peaks poking through it. On the right, the slope is bare volcanic rock in warm ochre and grey, catching low sun, with tussock and small shrubs along the path edge. Above, a sky of pink and gold lit cloud on the left and cooler blue-grey on the right.

What it is like to build

The path is a perspective line running from the bottom edge to the middle, and it is the best thing in the box. The cobbles are a strong repeating texture that narrows as it recedes, so a path piece can be placed by how big its stones are. Build it first.

Then the rope handrails, which are two long thin diagonals crossing the picture and are unmistakable. The cloud sea on the left is the hard region, a large flat white field with almost no feature, and it goes in by shape. The rock on the right is easier than it looks, because the low sun means every face is either lit warm or in cool shadow, so sort on that.
