Ravensburger - Puzzle Passion 1000 Piece Puzzle

What you are looking at

The face at the bottom of the frame is lifted from The Birth of Venus, and everything above it grows out of her hair. Orchids, lilies, tulips, proteas, morning glories and anthuriums. Spaniels, a dachshund, kittens, a chimpanzee, a lion, a zebra and a giraffe. A toucan, a macaw, a flamingo, a kingfisher and a dove. An octopus and a red fish on the right. A violin, a gold trumpet and a French horn. Palm trees, ferns and coral. And tucked in among them, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the pyramids, a Greek island church, a geisha, a carnival dancer with butterfly wings, and, if you look properly, several jigsaw pieces.

What it is like to build

This is the easiest kind of hard puzzle. There is no background anywhere: every square centimetre is a different object, in a different colour, at a different scale. That means almost every piece carries unique information and you will almost never be stuck with a pile of identical pieces.

Sort by object, not by region. Pull all the pink out, all the yellow, all the green, and then work object by object, finishing one flower or one animal at a time. The face is the only large area of continuous smooth tone and it is the single hardest part of the puzzle, so do it last, when the collage has closed in around it and the hole tells you where things go.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters here

Made in Germany since 1891, no two pieces share a shape, thick board, linen-textured low-glare laminate. On a maximalist collage the low-glare finish is doing more work than usual, because an image with this many saturated colours under a direct lamp is genuinely tiring to look at on a glossy surface.
