What you are looking at

A great snow-topped dome standing in a moonlit landscape of fir trees and ski slopes, with the front wall removed. Inside, rooms on three levels: a workshop of elves at benches, a stores room stacked with parcels, a wrapping room, a room full of toys mid-assembly with a decorated tree in it, a kitchen, and a sitting room with a fire and an armchair. Ladders and bunting between the levels.

Outside, the reindeer and sleigh already airborne at the top right with Santa aboard, and along the bottom a whole line of small figures in the snow: elves, penguins, a polar bear on the right, a reindeer on the left, and someone on a sledge.

What it is like to build

The architecture is a gift, so use it. The dome's outline and the internal walls divide this picture into nine boxes with hard edges. Build the outer dome and the dividing walls first, and every remaining piece then belongs in one of nine rooms rather than one of a thousand places. Very few puzzles hand you a structure this useful.

Then take one room at a time. Each has its own dominant colour, pink, green, blue, cream, so a pile sorted by colour is effectively a pile sorted by room. The night sky is the hard part, a large deep-blue field with only scattered snowflakes, and it should be the last thing you do.
