A wooden staircase running down a cliff to a beach the colour of bone, with the sun sitting on the water at the bottom of it. You are standing at the top step looking down, which is what makes this picture work: the whole image points at one spot.
Praia do Camilo, near Lagos on the Algarve coast of Portugal, from Ravensburger's Beautiful Walkways series. The staircase is the reason people know the place. It is a long timber flight of about 200 steps zigzagging down the ochre cliff, and it is the only way in. The beach at the bottom is really two small coves joined by a tunnel cut through the rock, which is why the sand you can see looks too small for the crowds it holds. Around it: golden limestone stacks standing out of the shallows, water going from clear turquoise at the sand to deep blue further out, dense green scrub on the cliff to the right, and a low sun laying a straight gold path across the sea.
The staircase is a gift and you should take it first. It runs from the bottom edge of the picture right into the middle, and it is made of long straight timber lines with hard shadows under every tread. Do the two handrails, which are continuous and converge on the beach, and you have a spine through the centre of the puzzle before you have placed a hundred pieces.
Then split the cliffs, which divide themselves. Warm ochre rock on the left, cool green scrub on the right, almost no overlap between the two.
The sea and the sky are the hard third. Both are smooth gradients with no structure at all, and sorting them by light and dark will not work because they are lit from the same point. Sort them by warmth instead: near the sun the blue turns green then gold, at the edges of the frame it stays cold. Lay them out in that order before you try to place any of them, and build outward from the horizon line, which is the one hard edge up there.
Ravensburger have been in Ravensburg since 1883 and making puzzles there since 1891. In a 1000 piece no two pieces share the same shape, and this title is cut with Softclick, so a piece that is nearly right will not seat and the finished puzzle lifts as one. On a smooth sea gradient that is the difference between knowing you are right and hoping. The board is thick and laminated with a linen texture, so it does not flare under a lamp.

The coastal sunset is one of the most heavily fished subjects in the whole category, and the thing that separates a good one from wallpaper is whether the picture has a structure running through it. This one does, and the staircase is it. The rest of that shelf is at Scenery & Landscapes. Australia is a bigger market for this than most people assume: on our index of English-language search interest, Australia ranks third of 44 major markets, ahead of the United Kingdom and behind only the United States and New Zealand.
