What you are looking at

Green water running away under a low stone bridge with an ornate wrought-iron balustrade. On the left, a brick palazzo with a carved stone doorway and a heavy iron grille. On the right, a rust-red wall with a stone balcony and a mooring pole striped orange and white. Weed on the waterline where the tide has worked at the brick for a few centuries. What it is like to build

Venice is harder than it looks, and this one is harder than Venice Romance. The city is essentially two materials, water and pale stone, and both repeat. Here you also have the gondola itself: a large black shape in the bottom third with a lacquered finish and almost no internal detail.

Sort by texture direction, not by colour. Ripple on the water runs horizontally. Brickwork, shutters and the mooring pole run vertically. The reflections sit between the two and blur both. Do that and the canal stops being a grind. Build the bridge first, since the ironwork is the only fine repeating linework in the picture and it locks the middle of the image in place.
