Ravensburger - The Duomo Florence 1000 Piece Puzzle

Florence from the hill, framed by leaves, with Brunelleschi's dome sitting over the rooftops like it has no business being that big. This is the view from the south side of the Arno looking back across the city, and it is the one every visitor tries to photograph and almost nobody gets right.

What you are looking at

Three towers and a dome, and they are worth knowing before you sort a single piece. On the left, the square crenellated tower of the Palazzo Vecchio. In the middle, the pale green-and-white marble of Giotto's bell tower. Behind it, the cathedral itself, Santa Maria del Fiore, its long striped flank running away to the right. And over all of it, the terracotta dome Filippo Brunelleschi raised between 1420 and 1436 without the timber centring every other builder of the age said was impossible. It is still the largest masonry dome ever built. Behind the city, the blue Apennine foothills. In front, the ochre and rust roof tiles of the ordinary streets nobody photographs.

What it is like to build

The frame of leaves is the trap and the gift. Ravensburger have run a canopy of backlit green foliage around three sides of this image, which means several hundred pieces of almost-identical dappled green. Do not start there. Start with the dome, which is the only large area of unbroken warm terracotta in the picture, then run the marble of the campanile down from it, then the ridge line of the hills.

The roofs are the long middle. Hundreds of small orange rectangles at slightly different angles. Sort them by the direction the ridge line runs rather than by colour, and work outward from the buildings you have already anchored. Leave the leaf canopy for last, when the shape of the hole tells you as much as the picture does.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters on an image like this

Ravensburger have been in Ravensburg since 1883 and have been making puzzles there since 1891. In a 1000 piece Ravensburger, no two pieces share the same shape, so a piece that is nearly right will not seat convincingly.
