What you are looking at

The pair fill the centre of the frame, sitting close enough that their heads overlap. The one on the left is calmer, ears down, looking slightly away. The one on the right has its head tilted, ears back, mouth open and tongue out. Both are the pale honey-gold of a retriever at about ten weeks, and the light is coming from behind and above, so their coats are rimmed bright.

Around and behind them, long meadow grass going to seed, with dandelion clocks, yellow hawkbit flowers and broad dock leaves in the foreground. The background is thrown completely out of focus into a soft wash of green, so nothing behind them resolves at all.

What it is like to build

The faces are twenty minutes and the rest is a fur and grass problem. Eyes, noses and open mouths are the only high-contrast features in the picture, so place those first and you have the two heads pinned.

Then split fur from grass, which is easier than it sounds. Puppy coat is soft, warm and runs in tracts; meadow grass is cool green and runs in long straight blades. Sort on that, then sort the fur by direction, because the coat lies in a known way over the shoulders and chest. The out-of-focus background is the hard region, a large smooth green wash with no structure, and at 500 pieces there is mercifully not much of it. This is a comfortable evening rather than a campaign.
