A farrier shoeing a shire horse outside his forge, while a flock of sheep is driven past him down the lane. Painted by Trevor Mitchell, and there are four separate small stories happening across one village street.
On the left, the forge: an ironstone cottage with a red pantile roof, a brick chimney and a pair of horseshoes nailed above the door. A farrier in a flat cap and braces holds a grey shire by the halter while a second man, bent double in a leather apron, works on its raised hind hoof over a stand. A chestnut horse in full harness waits behind them with a third man at its head, and a small boy in a grey jumper watches with a black labrador on a lead.
Down the middle, a woman in a green coat with a wicker basket on a bicycle, and a shepherd in a cap driving a flock of sheep toward you with a border collie working the edge. On the right, a thatched cottage, the sign of The Talbot Inn, and a horse-drawn milk float with a churn and a milkman handing a bottle to a woman in a yellow dress at her gate. A church spire in the distance, big cumulus above, and swallows over the roofs. A leaflet is included in the box.
Build the buildings first, and they are unusually generous. The ironstone cottage, the red roof, the white render and the thatch are four completely different materials with hard straight edges, and between them they fix the whole top half.
Then the horses. The grey, the chestnut and the milk float pony are the three largest single-colour masses in the picture. The sheep are the hard region, a flock of near identical cream and white bodies in the middle of the road, and the way in is that each has a dark face and legs, so place the faces first and let the fleeces fill between them. The road and the sky go in last by tone.
Made in Germany since 1891. No two pieces in a 1000 piece share a shape, which does real work on a flock of sheep and on massed summer foliage, both of which genuinely repeat. Thick board and a linen-textured, low-glare laminate.

Trevor Mitchell is one of the most reliably stocked artists in this category and his subject is always the same: an ordinary working day in a village, painted with enough care that the faces are individuals rather than a crowd. If you like this, we hold several more of his across Gibsons, Falcon and Ravensburger. Derived from multiple public data sources across retail, search and community platforms, refreshed 31 August 2026.
