Ravensburger - Tuscan Oasis 1000 Piece Puzzle

A sitting room with no front wall, standing on its own in a Tuscan valley. The conceit is deliberate and slightly surreal: fully furnished interior, pantiled roof, doors flung open, and vineyards running away behind it.

What you are looking at

A small stone pavilion with a terracotta pantile roof, doves on the ridge, and ivy and pink roses growing over the eaves. Both tall glazed doors stand open, and inside is a proper room: a coral-red sofa with patterned cushions, a mustard yellow armchair with a footstool, a deep blue patterned rug, a table lamp on a side table, a mirror and a framed picture on the green wall, and shelves of ornaments and copper pans.

Outside on the flagstone terrace, a wrought iron bistro table with a mosaic top and two chairs with orange and pink cushions. A ginger cat sitting on the stones. A classical statue on a plinth to the left, a stone fountain to the right, a basket of pink roses, potted citrus and climbing roses on both doors. Behind, the valley: a cypress-lined drive climbing to a villa on the ridge, vineyards, olive groves, and the sun going down through haze on the right.

What it is like to build

The building splits the puzzle into inside and outside, and they are different jobs. Inside is saturated and object-rich: red sofa, yellow chair, blue rug, all unique in the frame and all quick. Outside is soft, green and graded.

Build the roof line and the door frames first. They are the strongest geometry and they define the boundary between your two piles. Then the furniture. The landscape is the long part, layered green hillside with cypresses, and the way in is depth: near foliage is sharp and dark, distant hills are pale and hazy, so sort by softness before colour. The flagstones are the last job and go in by shape.
