Ravensburger - Universal & Amblin 2000 Piece Adult's Puzzle

A composite of the Universal and Amblin catalogue, built as one continuous scene rather than a grid of posters. Bottom centre, the great white breaching with the Orca and a swimmer behind it. What it is like to build

2000 pieces is a different commitment and you should plan for it. Finished, this is 98 by 75 cm, which is bigger than a lot of dining tables allow. Measure before you start, or work on a board you can move, because you will not be finishing this in one sitting.

The good news is the composition does the sorting for you. There are six clear regions, each with its own dominant colour: grey shark and white water, brown dinosaur and green jungle, the white moon disc, the tan E.T., the silver car, the blue night house. Sort into six piles first, build each as an island, and join them at the end. The lightning is the hardest part, thin bright forks over a dark purple sky with almost no other cue, and it is the right thing to leave until the islands have closed in around it.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters at this size

At 2000 pieces the individual pieces get smaller and the tolerance for a sloppy cut vanishes. Ravensburger have made puzzles in Germany since 1891 and no two pieces in the box share a shape, which is what stops a 2000 piece becoming an exercise in forcing. Thick board, and a linen-textured low-glare laminate that matters on an image this dark and this saturated.
