One photograph containing both day and night. Look along it from left to right: the left half is a sunlit late afternoon, the right half is night with the moon up. It is a single continuous image and the transition happens in the middle without a seam.
The Grand Canal during the Regata Storica, the historic regatta Venice has rowed every September for centuries. The water is full of ceremonial boats: gilded barges with rowers in scarlet, gold and blue livery, a crimson and gold state barge in the left foreground flying a banner with the lion of Saint Mark, dragon-prowed boats in green and gold, and dozens of smaller craft further up the canal.
Palazzi line both banks, ochre and cream on the left in full sun with flags hanging from the windows, and on the right in deep blue shadow with their windows lit gold and a crescent moon above the rooflines. In the centre distance, the dome of Santa Maria della Salute and the campanile beyond it, with the sun setting behind at the vanishing point. The water carries the whole thing again as reflection, warm on the left and violet on the right.
This is a real event and it was rowed a week ago. The Regata Storica takes place on the Grand Canal on the first Sunday of September every year, and the 2026 edition was Sunday 6 September. It opens with the corteo storico, the historical procession in the picture: scores of sixteenth century style boats, gondoliers in period costume, carrying the Doge and the senior officials of the Republic up the canal before the racing starts.
What it commemorates is a kingdom changing hands. The parade re-enacts the welcome Venice gave Caterina Cornaro in 1489. She was a Venetian noblewoman who had become Queen of Cyprus by marriage, and she renounced her throne in favour of the Republic. Venice had declared her a Daughter of Saint Mark so that it could claim Cyprus through her, and the pageant on the water was the city celebrating the acquisition.
The regatta was cancelled in 1939 for the war and resumed in 1946. It has run every year since.
Sort left to right by light temperature before you do anything else. That single move turns an intimidating picture into two manageable halves plus a transition. A warm sunlit piece and a cold moonlit piece can look almost identical in isolation and belong a metre apart on the table.
Build the buildings, then the boats, then the water. The palazzi give you strong horizontal roof lines and regular window grids down both edges. The boats are the fun part: each is a compact block of saturated colour and gold. The canal is the campaign, a large rippled surface carrying broken reflections, and the only way through it is the same left-to-right temperature sort applied again.
Made in Germany since 1891. No two pieces in a 1000 piece share the same shape, which is what keeps you honest across a large expanse of rippled water where colour has stopped being decisive. Thick board and a linen-textured, low-glare laminate, which matters on an image that is half night.

Day-to-night composites are a distinct photographic discipline: the photographer holds one camera position for many hours and blends a whole day into a single frame. As a puzzle subject it is unusually rewarding, because the picture contains a piece of information no ordinary photograph can, and you spend the build discovering where the join is. Derived from multiple public data sources across retail, search and community platforms, refreshed 31 August 2026.
