A working canal rather than the Grand Canal, which is why it feels like somewhere you could actually stand. Shuttered houses in ochre and rose, a bridge crossing at the narrow point, boats tied where cars would be in any other city, and the light dropping in behind the rooflines. What it is like to build

Venice is harder than it looks, and it is worth knowing why before you start. The city is essentially two materials, water and pale stone, and both repeat. Long stretches of this image give you the same three or four tones in the same proportion, so colour alone will not sort it.

The trick is to sort by texture direction rather than by colour. Ripple on water runs horizontally, stonework and shutters run vertically, and the reflections sit between the two. Do that and the canal stops being a grind. This one sits in the middle of our Venice range for difficulty: harder than an autumn scene, well short of a pure canal study.
