Wasgij - Mystery 22: Winter Games 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

The picture on the box is not the puzzle. In a Mystery you build what happens next, and at these winter games almost nobody is upright.

Which Wasgij is this

In a Mystery you build the moments after the box scene. In an Original you build what a character can see. In a Destiny you build the same place at another time. The character on the side of the box, a skier in a pink hat and goggles holding a single ski, is whose next few seconds you are building.

What is on the box

A snowfield with a WASGIJ WINTER GAMES banner and a FINISH line strung across it. A huge gold trophy on a plinth in the middle of the picture with a queue of competitors around it. Cross-country skiers in numbered lycra in yellow, blue, pink and red streaming toward the line, several of them tangled. A ski jumper in the air top right and another on the ramp behind. Ice skaters on a rink at the bottom left, one in a red catsuit already down.

Around the edges: a judges' stand with a man in a black fur coat, a commentary box, a camera crew, a coach with a clipboard, a spectator in an enormous fur coat with a fluffy hat, two people drinking from steaming mugs bottom right, a St Bernard, penguins, an eagle, and a lodge with a chairlift running behind it up the mountain.

What it is like to build

Snow is the difficulty and it is roughly half the picture. White to pale blue, very low contrast, with little drawing.

So sort into two piles at the start: pieces with a black line on them and pieces without. Wasgij art is heavy outline over flat fill, so the first pile is nearly all figures and objects and the second is nearly all snow. Work the first hard, then place the second by shape. The trophy and the FINISH banner are your only large landmarks in the middle of the field, so build them early.

A Wasgij with a lot of snow in it is the hardest combination the series produces, because you lose both the reference picture and the colour information at the same time.
