Wasgij - Xmas 20: Spirits of Christmas 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

The picture on the box is not the puzzle, and there are two puzzles in the box. Wasgij Christmas 20, and this Jumbo Special Edition contains two 1000 piece puzzles, so you get 2000 pieces of building for one price.

How a Wasgij works

You do not build what you can see. You build what one character in the scene can see, which is a completely different picture that appears nowhere on the packaging. Here the instruction is to puzzle what the Dove sees, and the dove is the character shown on the side of the box. You work it out from logic and from the pieces themselves.

Then, because this is a two-puzzle edition, you can also build the box image as a normal puzzle. That is a genuinely good way to try the format: do the easy one first, then the Wasgij, and you have something to compare against.

What is on the box

Oxford Street in London at night, packed. Big Ben lit at the far left, an Underground station entrance with the roundel sign, and the street strung with enormous illuminated decorations overhead, a chandelier, a disc, a gift box picked out in gold lights on the shop canopy. A department store front glowing yellow along the right. Santa appears to be sliding down the canopy at the top.

The crowd fills the bottom two thirds in classic Wasgij style: dozens of caricatured faces, mouths open, all reacting to something. A busker with a guitar at the left in front of an open piano, a man in a top hat, a woman in a leopard coat, children in bobble hats, a nutcracker figure and a chimney sweep in the crowd.

What it is like to build

Sort by colour and texture, hard, because you have no reference for the real puzzle. That is the discipline the format demands. Wasgij art is drawn in heavy black outline over flat fills, so a piece carrying a line is worth ten pieces that do not, and skin tones, night sky and warm shop-window gold are three piles that belong in three different regions.

Expect longer than a standard 1000 and a better payoff at the end. The reveal is the product.
