Clementoni - The White Stallion Fluorescent 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A white horse galloping through moonlit water, and the finished puzzle glows in the dark. That is the whole reason to choose this one: build it, leave a lamp on it, then turn the lights off.

The fluorescent bit, and how to actually get it working

The ink is phosphorescent, which means it is charged by light rather than powered by anything. Give the finished puzzle ten or fifteen minutes under a bright lamp or in daylight before you switch off, and the horse, the moon and the water spray hold a pale green glow for a good while afterwards. A quick flick of the light switch will not do it. The effect fades as the charge runs down and recharges every time the lights go back on.

What you are looking at

The stallion fills the lower centre, mid-gallop through shallow water, mane and tail streaming, forelegs thrown forward and spray flying up around its hooves in a scatter of bright white points. Behind it, a fjord of jagged blue-black mountains with snow on their faces and dark conifers along the shore. A full moon sits high on the right in a bank of thin cloud, and the whole scene is lit cold blue by it. A second, fainter moon or nebula glows top right.

What it is like to build

The horse is the only light object in a very dark picture, so it goes in fast. Everything else is one of three blues.

Sort the dark by texture, not by tone. The mountains are faceted with hard angular edges. The water is horizontal and rippled. The sky is smooth. Those three cover most of the picture and they are genuinely distinguishable, where the blues alone are not. The spray is the most enjoyable region, hundreds of tiny bright points against near-black, and it is also where the glow ink is concentrated, so those pieces have a slightly different surface you can feel.

Why Clementoni

Italian, made in Italy, in their compact box format, which uses noticeably less cardboard than a standard box. A dark image with a phosphorescent layer over it is a demanding print, because the glow ink sits on top and can flatten the shadow detail underneath if it is not laid down carefully.
